Preparation towards Application

In Canada, each province and territory is in charge of their own education system. Their education system is divided into:

Primary and secondary schools

Schools that teach students up to the grade 12 level are known as primary and secondary schools. Primary usually means grades 1-8 and secondary usually means grades 9-12.

All primary and secondary schools in Canada can enrol international students.

There are special rules for minor children studying in Canada.

Post-secondary schools

Post-secondary schools are:

  • colleges
  • universities
  • private career colleges and
  • vocational and technical schools.

Each post-secondary school has its own set of rules on how to apply, including the level of English or French you need to be accepted.

How to Apply to a School, College or University

Once you choose a school, college or university, you must apply to go there. Every school has different rules on how to apply.

Make sure you apply at least:

  1. six months in advance if you want to study at a primary or secondary school,
  2. a year in advance for a post-secondary program at a university, college, etc.

Contact the school where you want to study to learn how to apply. They will give you the list of all the documents you need to send them. Your school will be able to tell you about:

  • the cost to apply
  • tuition fees
  • health insurance
  • rent and how much it costs to live in Canada
  • language tests.

Fill out the application forms for the school or schools of your choice. Follow their instructions to submit them.

If the school admits you as a student, they will send you an acceptance letter. You need this letter to apply for a study permit.

Eligibility requirements

You can come to Canada to study if you

  1. qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler.

If you’re under 18, you don’t have to be fully vaccinated. You do need to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan.

  • are enrolled at a DLI
  • prove you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
  • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required) and prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

Why get a Study Permit if you don’t need one?

There are 2 reasons you may want to get a study permit even if you don’t need one:

  1. Continue studying

If you already have a study permit and your study situation changes, you can continue studying in Canada while your permit is valid.

Example: If you’re transitioning between levels of study (primary, secondary and post-secondary), you don’t need to apply for a new study permit if your current study permit is still valid.

If you apply to extend your permit before it expires, you have maintained your status and can continue studying while you wait for your new study permit. If your study permit extension is refused, you must stop studying.

  • Work on or off campus.

If you have a study permit and you’re registered as a full-time student at a DLI, you may be able to work on-campus or off-campus. If so, your study permit will include a condition that says you’re allowed to work while studying.

If you don’t have a study permit, you can’t work while you’re studying in Canada. In this case, you need to apply for a work permit.

Application for a work permit (Optional)

You need to apply online for a work permit. You will answer a few questions to find out how to apply. Bellow are the questions:

  1. Where are you applying from?
  2. Are you a Ukrainian national or an accompanying family member of a Ukrainian national?

NOTE:

Even if your work permit application is approved, you can only travel to Canada if you’re exempt from COVID-19 travel restrictions. In most cases, you must qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler.
