Self -esteem encompasses a person’s subjective sense of personal worth or value. It can also be explained as how much one appreciates and likes himself regardless of any circumstances. One’s self-esteem is largely influenced by one’s feeling of competence, sense of belonging , self confidence , identity and the feeling of security.
Self-esteem is very important in everyone’s life especially as it has a bearing on decision-making , relationships, one’s well-being and emotional health.
The subject of low self-esteem is one that cannot be ignored. Low self-esteem comes up when someone lacks the confidence about who they are and what they can do. People with low self-esteem usually feel incompetent, unloved, or inadequate and are consistently afraid about making mistakes or letting other people down.

A person with low self-esteem needs to accept himself especially as no one is perfect . Everyone has his own flaws and imperfections but that does permit one to look down upon himself in any way .One’s ability to accept himself is one sure way to deal with low self -esteem.
It is very useful that a person with low self-esteem becomes particular with the kind of people to associate with . To improve one’s self-esteem, one’s association should be with people who accept the person as he is and makes him feel good . These people be either family members or friends.
People with low self-esteem should endeavour to challenge the bad thoughts or negative impressions they have about themselves . These bad thoughts or negative impressions would have to be replaced with positive thoughts, ambitions and memories worth celebrating .
It has been established that eating well and exercising boosts endorphins , the body’s natural opiates which makes one feel good and also promotes a more positive mood. A person with low self-esteem can take up to eating well and exercising as it could boost one’s confidence.
Stress as well as stressful situations has a way of affecting one’s self-esteem .It reduces one’s confidence and increases the incidence of negative thinking but it would be very important for one to practise relaxation even in the most stress situation.
