Joe Toney and Lucille O’Neal were his parents. Joe Toney, Shaq’s father, was a high school basketball player who earned a scholarship to play at Seton Hall. Following his release from prison for drug possession, Joe Toney granted Phillip Arthur Harrison, Shaq’s stepfather, the legal right to be Shaq’s father.

Shaq found time for music outside of basketball and put out four rap albums. Shaq is also well-known for producing electronic music and performing as a DJ under the stage name DIESEL.
